Thank you. This was extremely helpful and perfectly timed to cross my path. I have taken the second path and it feels like I’m at a point where I can’t keep walking, but your words just pushed me a little closer to the place where I jump. Thank you! Please follow me as well. Part of my growth is here on Substack as a writer in order for all the other pieces to connect. 🙏🏽
A quote from Arthur Schopenhauer came to mind as I read this>
“Everything that is really fundamental in a man, and therefore genuine works, as such, unconsciously; in this respect like the power of
nature. That which has passed through the domain of consciousness is thereby transformed into an idea or picture; and so if it comes to be uttered, it is only an idea or picture which passes from one person to another.
Accordingly, any quality of mind or character that is genuine and lasting, is originally unconscious; and it is only when unconsciously brought into play that it makes a profound impression. If any like quality is consciously exercised, it means that it has been worked up; it becomes intentional, and therefore matter of affectation, in other words, of deception.
If a man does a thing unconsciously, it costs him no trouble; but if he tries to do it by taking trouble, he fails. This applies to the
origin of those fundamental ideas which form the pith and marrow of all genuine work. Only that which is innate is genuine and will hold water; and every man who wants to achieve something, whether in practical life, in literature, or in art, must follow the rules without knowing them”
The Essays of Arthur Schopenhauer; Studies in Pessimism
Thank you for sharing it, Laurence. Schopenhauer really cuts to the core of authenticity. That line about genuine work being unconscious hits especially hard. It’s a great reminder to trust what's innate rather than overworking it into something contrived.
I think it’s never too late to chase the dream, even in small steps. Steady jobs bring security, but fulfillment matters just as much. Wishing you the courage and clarity to go after what lights you up!
Really nice, Rosalie. And great writing. Thank you.
Look forward to reading more:)

I picked the steady job over the dream. Wish I had someone to tell me a steady income isn’t everything!

“Comfort doesn’t feel safe;it feels like a trap” love this !
I'm really happy it resonated with you in some way!
It's like you are writing about me. I enjoy teaching adults and I'm really good at it. But my heart only sings with purpose when I'm writing fiction.
It’s amazing to be good at something and still know where your true passion lives. Keep writing, your heart knows exactly where it belongs!!
"my heart only sings with purpose when....." - What a beautiful statement!
